Dendrobium hybrid new pseudobulbs; flowering time? Male
Default Dendrobium hybrid new pseudobulbs; flowering time?

Hello all. I have this Denrobium hybrid of hybrids Nancy Fairfax X Aussies Tapestry (D. engae/D. johnsoniae X D. finisterrae/ D. taipiniense). I mounted it on cork bark. Since I acquired it 1.5 months ago it has grown what I assume will be new psuedobulbs very quickly. How long does it take these to mature? Must the new psuedobulbs mature before it will flower? I'm certainly new to this and looking for a sense of a timeline to flower. Thanks in advance for your input! I'll attach a couple of photos.

I don't know this particular hybrid. However, all the dendrobiums I have bloom off mature pseudobulbs. Hopefully, someone will be able to give you more information - it's a super healthy plant!

I totally agree with jcec1, these will bloom only on mature pseudobulbs. (Many Dens bloom on old pseudobulbs, don't know if these are in that group) I'm not familiar with that particular hybrid (or the parents) either. I am somewhat familiar with Den. johnsoniae and Den finisterrae... Both are vigorous, and can get rather large (and don't bloom until fairly mature). With all that new growth, it is on its way. In fact, I suspect that you're going to wish that you had put it on a larger mount. (The older growths still look fairly young) Timing is good - with new growth you'll be getting new roots. Do be patient - it may have to get bigger to bloom but it certainly is off to an excellent start.

Thank you jsec1 and Roberta! This orchid has been on steeply discounted sale locally without any indication of what the blooming plant might look like. I'm excited to see how it might turn out. Both this and my miniature Dendrobium tetragonum are growing new pseudobulbs but I so much want to see the flowers.

I still haven't managed to get this one to bloom. It has gotten bigger and even now is producing new psuedobulbs. I've abused it a bit at times, gave it a pretty bad sunburn, but is seems to recover and just keeps growing new pseudobulbs with dried out flower sheaths.

Try keeping it always moist through the growing season. Are you fertilizing?

I only fertilize it lightly when I bother to fertilize it all. Vegetative growth seems to be strong.

Fertilizer makes a huge difference for most plants. And it still may not be large/old enough to flower.
