It might be good to just straight-up ask if you're allowed to have plants in the room, at all. If so, where are you allowed to put them? If not, put it in the closet- I believe they aren't allowed to open anything while inspecting, they just have to look at what's out and available.

I can understand why a dorm might have a plant ban, but I'd argue that the real psychological benefits of regular exposure to plants are worth having around, and that there's things students could make a much worse mess with. Just make 'em sign the usual "if you break something, you have to pay for it" thing.
