What do I repot my Zygopetalum Advance Australia in?
Question What do I repot my Zygopetalum Advance Australia in?

I got a zygo 'Advance Australia' from Orchids Limited about a month ago. She's been thriving since then, she got acclimated quickly and already has 2 new leaves out! The flower spike just started to fade so I cut it off, and as I understand it apparently now is the best time to repot a zygo. It's really difficult to find good sources for advance australias since they're so niche, and the whole 'are zygos terrestrial or epiphytic' debate is still raging as far as I'm aware. She arrived potted in sphag, and because she's doing so well I'm afraid to switch to a different medium (or even repot right now for that matter!)
What would you guys suggest? I leave a humidifier on pretty much all the time in my room and the windows open, so good ventilation. Temps in coldest part of Winter are generally 40-ish during the days and 30 at night (F). It can reach the 90s in Summer. Thanks in advance!

At this link here ----- growers mentioned various media they use there.

In the tropics over here - I have been very successfully growing a zygo in approx 5 to 8 mm diameter scoria. I think it originally came in a bark+perlite mix.

I'll take some pics a little later to upload ----- of the zygo I've been growing ------ it's a Debbie de Mello 'Honolulu Bay'

Zygos do not do well if they dry out between waterings. They need to be watered while still moist.

In Hawaii, where it rains a lot, they can grow them in a bark/perlite mix. However, even watering heavily twice a week, I can't keep them looking good in that mix. I switch them to a spagnum moss/bark mix (4:1), and that works beautifully for me (in greenhouse).

I grow my Zygo in very fine bark (8-10mm). And now comes the part where everyone thinks I am crazy. I have the pot sitting in a saucer. When I water, I let the water collect in the saucer (up to ¾ inch) and water again when the saucer has been empty for two days or so. I also fertilize heavily with up to 1800 Microsiemens. There a ventilation holes in the pot over the water level.

I use Kim's method and in the summer I also bottom water. While they do better slightly cooler, mine temps are in the low 80s summer, low to mid 70s the rest of the year. If you spray frequently with Neem oil, you can head off fungus issues.

Same as Kim here.
fine bark, sponge rock, charcoal and sphagnum mix.
Same thing I use for all my oncidiums, paph's and phrag's.

Thank you all for the help! I'll definitely try Kim's method since so many of you are recommending it. Happy orchid growing to you all!

Olive ----- these pics were taken half an hour or so ago. When the humidity is good ..... and the temperature and lighting is satisfactory ------ these orchids can grow in volcanic rock nicely too.

I grow the 'terrestrial' Spath. plicata in the same way here ----- also doing nicely in volcanic rock.

The bark/perlite etc mix method is excellent too.

When I first got the plant ----- the two new plants (with the newest leaves) were not there. A small little shoot is coming out too (seen on the left-hand-side in the first pic). Doing well.

The spots on the leaves are due to scale attack or something. So every now and then ------ I spray all my orchids with a mixture of pyrethrum and imidacloprid (leaves, stem and all) - which keeps scale/mites/mealybugs etc at bay. I use one of those hair-dresser 'atomiser' type spray nozzles. Fine mist. Must wear some face-mask etc - just in case. Works nicely though.
