Hello all:
I believe someone explained how to post pictures so that they don't rotate when uploaded. I tried to follow those instructions but I couldn't figure it out.
If I scan the picture to a PDF will it upload correctly? Every time I upload picture it rotates incorrectly.

Digital photos aren't really 'rotated' as such. They just have the 'appearance' of being rotated - because the device (camera) we used was held in an orientation that was not in the 'up' position.

For a mobile phone ------- the usual 'vertical' orientation is not the 'up' position for photograph shots ------ even though a lot of photos are indeed taken with the phone held in the usual 'vertical' position.

Instead - the 'up' direction for mobile phones is the right-hand long edge of the phone. So when taking phone-pics, and if we rotate the phone so that the right-hand long edge becomes the TOP ------ then that's the 'up' position ------- and then all photos taken will look 'normal' when transferred to any computer.

The reason for 'vertically-taken' pics looking normal when we browse within our own mobile phone ----- is because a software in our phones reads the orientation information, and then displays the image so that it looks 'normal' to us ----- without actually changing the orientation information of the image file (stored in the image file itself in the phone's memory).

There are software that can help to read the image file, and see whether or not the image does contain orientation information ------ and then it can help make some permanent adjustments on the image file itself ----- basically amends the file based on the orientation information ----- and can save the image to a new file - so that amended image (together with new orientation information) will then forever be displayed in the way that looks 'normal' to us.

For those people using MS Windows computers, I have a software I use that works on my Android Samsung S2 mobile phone pics ------ but might work for other mobile phone pics too. Click here.

What SouthPark explains is how taking photos generally functions. What's happening on the forum is just a bug that slipped in during one of the last updates years ago, and as a result it doesn't read the orientation info correctly and posts everything in landscape format by default. A easy fix (normally) is to open the photo on your phone/computer in an editing app (in windows, the editor in the image viewer does the trick), rotate it and save, then rotate back to the correct orientation and save again. Sometimes you can just do it all in one go and rotate it 360° and save it. This rewrites the orientation info in a way that the forum can read. Attached is a photo as an example, with and without that rotation step.

What Camille mentioned is true. OrchidBoard once had a working feature that would take a look at orientation information (embedded within the image file itself) - and then it could then use that information to process the image - so that an image that was 'rotated' (relative to the camera's 'up' direction) could then be created and stored in OrchidBoard. And that new image would then always be displayed with an orientation that looks normal to us.

The orientation information embedded within an image file from mobile/cell-phones can be useful for forum sites ------ as it can be used to 'correct' the orientation. This is assuming that the orientation data is based on a regular code for regular camera devices with orientation sensors.

I have found that if I just do a "save as" (even using the same name, agree that you want to "replace" the file) using photo-editing software, "resets" the metadata in the file. I have hit the messed-up orientation issue in other software as well (like my web-editing program), this approach fixes the problem.

Software such as 'Irfanview' has an option that allows users of the software to choose whether or not to adjust the orientation of an image (based on orientation EXIF data).

Although - when an image is being displayed (and has been 'de-rotated') by an image viewer or image editor ----- the image editor will allow the 'de-rotated' image to be saved in a form that will be permanently 'de-rotated'.

For processing multiple image files (eg. automatically 'de-rotating multiple image files placed in some particular directory) ------- software such as Irfanview can probably do the de-rotating, and even automatic photo-resizing too ------- such as to process a bunch of high resolution pics, and de-rotate them, as well as scale down their sizes to smaller images of our choice ----- automatically.

Windows photo viewing software - such as photo viewer etc ..... generally displays photos automatically in 'de-rotated' form. The emphasis is on 'displays' - not physically altering the contents of the original image file.
