Hello, I've never grown a cattleya but have recently been reading and thinking that I'd like to give it a try. I've been looking at Cattleya nobilior. I grow in a north window with additional light strips and a small humidifier.. Phaps and Phals both do nicely and bloom. Does it sound like my environment is okay? When the grower says that the plant needs "hot" temperatures; what do they mean? Thank you in advance. I know someone knows and will point me in the right direction.

I would not pick C. nobilior as a first, nor even tenth windowsill Cattleya. Hot means temperatures in the 80s and 90s F. On your windowsill a C. nobilior might survive unhappily for a while but never thrive. Your conditions are good for what are called "windowsill Catts" like Sl. Orpettii.

If you are new to orchids, why not go to one of the 'big box' stores, or even a hardware store and get an inexpensive dendrobium, cattleya, and phalaenopsis. Learn to grow and rebloom them under your care. After you get them to rebloom 2 or 3 times, then you may want to branch out to something more challenging. Also, hybrids tend to be easier to grow than the species. It would be a real shame to pay more for a special plant just to have it die from being an inexperienced grower.

Just sayin'...

(in case anyone was thinking why is a 'noob' giving advice to anyone, I may be a 'noob' to this site, but I've had some of my vandas for about 28 years )

Thanks, while waiting for responses, I continued to research, found out what "hot" means and realized that this cattleya is not for my window.
