Catasetum with thrips?
Default Catasetum with thrips?

Hello,

I was wondering if you could help me with identifying the disease.

Do you think this catasetum has thrips? I am not sure. I bought this at a nursery and the leaves were already like this. I discovered it at home.

And do you have any advice for thrips?

I don't know what caused that. Catasetums have thin leaves and are susceptible to spider mites also. Thrips usually cause flower bud damage. You can prevent spider mite problems with high humidity and by regularly spraying the plant with plain water.

I am sorry, but I am not familiar with oedema. I googled it, but I can only find a human issue.

My bad - check this link out https://staugorchidsociety.org/PDF/E...ySueBottom.pdf

It might be something completely unrelated though, take my opinion with a handful of salt.

My first thought was also oedema. I'm no Catasetinae expert (have had only one, for a couple years), but I've seen oedema on mine. I guess it shouldn't be surprising seeing how much water these plants are given.

Oedema happens when the plant is taking up water faster than it is being transpired by the leaves, causing higher water pressure in the leaves, which causes cells in the inner leaf layers to burst. Usually it's caused by a combination of saturated medium and conditions not conducive for sufficient evaporation (high humidity, cool temps, cloudy weather)

I would not worry too much about it, as there is little that can be done to prevent it unless you have complete control over your climate, and you don't want to reduce watering of these plants in the growing season...
