Can you ID this orchid for me?
Can anyone recognize this orchid to at least give me the group/family it's under?
It was not happy in moss, but now repotted it's sending up another*shoot *or is that a spike???
It's never bloomed so I do not have any flower pic.
Somehow I did not keep track of this one when I bought it. Now I am trying to label and keep track of everything.
Your guess would be that it's a ???
Thanks

That is a catteleya and it has a flower coming soon. With the bloom it will be easy to know better.
I am sure some of the seniors will know more details just looking at the leaves and blobs.

It's in the Cattleya group. When it blooms, maybe there will be a clue as to parentage but even then you won't have a definitive ID. But getting it out of moss was a GOOD thing... Catts like to pretty much dry out between waterings. I have found that they actually don't like pots all that much even with large bark... they grow better after they get to the edge of the pot and escape. So I now am using wood or plastic baskets a lot for Catts and in general they grow better that way., But, that's with my watering (I water a lot... so take that into account if you want to use the approach_
The "shoot" is a new growth. That's always promising, whether it later develops a flower or not, it's the sign of a healthy plant.

I use large bark - lots of air, dries fast. Here are a few... the established ones climb out of their baskets, I just let them go wild. I think of the basket as a three-dimensional mount.

Thank you Roberta. Let look lovely. I can wait to have my greenhouse set up...
But I use plastic pots with holes and large bark and carbon chunks and they are doing great but ..one turned black and rotten. I posted this morning about it ..

Here is my latest Cattleya, I'm showing this one cause it shows the developing roots well
I follow all the principles Roberta has mentioned but as you can see they grow a bit different. There's several ways to growing orchids so don't be afraid to see what works best for you.

Looks great. Sure, match your medium and container to your growing conditions and your watering practices. It's the goal that counts - humid air around the roots. Big bark in baskets achieves that. Semi-hydro with inorganic medium achieves that. Lots of ways to get to the goal.

OMG!!!
I love those wooden baskets with big bark chips!!
I just wish i had the greenhouse to enjoy that set up in...two eastern window sills is all I have in a condo.
My wife wants a house one day so she can raise Holland Lop bunnies and then I will build a Geodesic Growing dome greenhouse and then I'll go wild!!!
When we retire!
