Hello Everyone,
Struggling along with my plants as usual... I bought this one at Lowe's at the end of October, and it seemed pretty happy until a day ago. Do you think it is cold damage?
I'm working on keeping both the humidity and temperature in my orchidarium up.
The temperature has been running close to 65 inside, even though room temperature is about 70. I've decreased the amount of time the fans are on. I've had a heat cable in there, but it's doing very little. I recently added a ceramic heat bulb I had lying around above one of the fans. Today it did finally get up to 70 in there, briefly.
I have a
misting system which I run for 3 minutes a day in the afternoon. I tried putting a submersible heater in the water tank for that and had it set at 75 degrees, but it didn't seem to help. When I watered, the temperature was still dropping to 63.
Also, the humidity drops to 40% in the morning, compared with about 25% in my house. I've tried
misting for 10 seconds or so, but again, then it gets cold.
I just installed a fogger and will run that on a humidistat, which I think will help a lot, hopefully without the temperature drops, plus I don't think the plants like water hitting them directly all of the time. Also, I built a "waterfall", really more of a drip wall, and plan on keeping the heater in the water reservoir (it's a self-contained system) to help with both issues. Been working on it a few days now, but of course now that it's installed, does not function like it did in the tests in the sink, so in the "working on it" category.
Why not just use a space heater? Well, the thermostat for the house in the same room. Also, everything is made out of acrylic, so that eliminates a lot of options. Attaching a pic from when I first built it so you can have an idea of what it is like. Size = 40"W x 21"D x 40"H.
