Desiring fragrant yellow phalaenopsis

Any suggestions?

With my limited space I am looking to build an interesting collection of species, colors and various fragrances! I do have a yellow peacock oncidium but unfortunately fragrance free.

So now I'd like to expand my phalaenopsis collection. I would appreciate any suggestions for a fragrant yellow phalaenopsis species.

Is there such an orchid?*If not then I'll settle for a non fragrant one.*

Also any suggestions of best growers to buy*phalaenopsis from?ThanksDr. Dave

There are two main groups of Phal hybrids. The ones with multiple very round flowers, naturally winter blooming, in pink to white, are not often fragrant. Another group has fewer flowers at a time, more star shaped, in colors yellow to red to white, summer blooming, and very often fragrant. The summer bloomers require warmer temperatures and may not do well in a cool home. Try Big Leaf Orchids or Louisiana Orchid Connection. If you want pure yellow with no spots, get a mericlone of a named hybrid. Seedlings are variable.

There aren't that many yellow species, let alone fragrant.
  • Phalaenopsis stuartiana var. nobilis is flashy yellow, but not always fragrant
  • Phalaenopsis floresensis can be yellow, I'm not sure it is scented
  • Phalaenopsis cochlearis ranges from light green to yellow, not scented
  • Phalaenopsis fasciata is yellow but is stripped, I'm not sure it's scented
  • Phalaenopsis pallens ranges from cream to pale yellow, not scented

Then you have the flava forms, but just like coerulea and alba, they can be hard to find and cost $$$.
Phalaenopsis hieroglyphica var. flava is gorgeous, but not fragrant.
Phal amboinensis flava would tick the boxes, but quality clones are expensive.

Big Leaf Orchids I've ordered from in the past as well as LOC. Peter Lin of Big Leaf has good descriptions of his plants and many hybrids and species. Also a nice guy to do business with.

I’ve found some nice fragrant NOID yellow Phalaenopsis in box stores, but this has gotten much more difficult with masks and COVID.

Hobby Growing has a great selection of Phalaenopsis but buyer satisfaction seems to be hit and miss: so far I’ve been happy with my orders from them but other people on here have not always received good plants.

It’s also important to make sure you’re buying a clone and not a seed propagated plant if you want a “surer” thing. In addition many fragrant Phalaenopsis are not very fragrant at room temperature (70s). It’s a bit of a gamble: I purchased a fragrant yellowish named clone that had virtually no scent and an almost identical NOID from the hardware store that smells great.

the only one I can think of is phal mannii flava or phal mannii var green.

They should have fragrance but not all are.
