Cattleya Care after Flowering
Default Cattleya Care after Flowering

Hello!
Not sure if this is the right place, but it's probably too basic a question for the cattleya forum.

I have two cattleyas which were in flower when I bought them from an orchid grower in Florida. Once the flowers were gone, I didn't do anything to the plants except water and feed them.
Once I figured out the light needs, I saw that one of them is putting out a flower spike,
My question is, should I remove the pseudobulbs which have not flowered or have flowered in the past?

Thanks for your input.

Nooooo! Those pseudobulbs are the energy source for the plant. You can trim the old stems that had the flowers, but the pseudobulbs are the plant itself! Indeed, when repotting/dividing, don't even think of having a division of less than 3 pseudobulbs, even if the old pseudobulbs lose leaves. As long as they are firm they are reserves for the plant.

When you see new roots (not just new growth) you can repot, again keeping the plant intact.

In the old days orchid growers would teach removing old pseudobulbs and roots. I think it had to do with trying to fit plants into small pots to cram more plants into the growing area. I leave all pseudobulbs and roots until the pseudobulbs are dry tan husks.

This is good. Orchids in the wild won't have any people to remove bulbs. So as long bulbs and/or leaves stay green - then don't remove any green portion of the plant.
