I don't think it will snap off if we just be careful when it comes time to move the orchid and the pot.
We just have to be 'spatially aware' ....... or 'situationally aware'. So when we do pick up the orchid for watering, we just have to avoid getting the roots caught on something, or making it bend or flex beyond a certain degree.
That's just what happens and what we have to do if we have to do the watering in that sort of way.
The other option is to use a watering technique that doesn't require the orchid and pot to be moved.
It is definitely possible to keep an orchid alive indefinitely by moving the orchid to water it in a basin or something. And it should be done if there's not much choice.
But personally, I think I would just put the orchid pot on a drainage grate, with a large enough pot dish for catching any water that drains out of the pot, and I would use a suitable pump-spray watering wand (with nozzle set to a suitable spray pattern --- not too wide, and not too narrow) ----- and then just water the orchid without needing to touch the orchid or pot at all.
