Should I stake or support this long long air root
Default Should I stake or support this long long air root

Hey guys. One of my Phalaenopsis has this really long air root. I love it I’m very happy that the plant is happy and healthy but I’m always worried that this root is going to snap off every time I take this plant to get watered. It’s very long and I’m wondering if I need to support it or if there’s a problem with it breaking off. If you guys could give me some tips here I’d appreciate it thank you

It looks happy! Leave it alone but be careful. Touching too much can damage the root.

I don't think it will snap off if we just be careful when it comes time to move the orchid and the pot.

We just have to be 'spatially aware' ....... or 'situationally aware'. So when we do pick up the orchid for watering, we just have to avoid getting the roots caught on something, or making it bend or flex beyond a certain degree.

That's just what happens and what we have to do if we have to do the watering in that sort of way.

The other option is to use a watering technique that doesn't require the orchid and pot to be moved.

It is definitely possible to keep an orchid alive indefinitely by moving the orchid to water it in a basin or something. And it should be done if there's not much choice.

But personally, I think I would just put the orchid pot on a drainage grate, with a large enough pot dish for catching any water that drains out of the pot, and I would use a suitable pump-spray watering wand (with nozzle set to a suitable spray pattern --- not too wide, and not too narrow) ----- and then just water the orchid without needing to touch the orchid or pot at all.

I agree with the advice to leave it as it is but to be very careful in handling or moving the plant. I have a number of Phals with long air roots like the one you've pictured. They want to go where they want to go, and I think that is how they are happiest. I confess I have broken the occasional root or bud over the years, but that's where that spatial or situational awareness mentioned by SouthPark comes in. It takes constant vigilance, especially if, like many of us, you must move your plants to water them.

Roots generally are a no-touch zone. Anything you might do to "help" it is more likely to do harm. Let it do what it wants to do. Unlike spikes, that will suddenly get heavy on the end when the flowers open (and so may need staking) a root won't snap under its own weight. All it needs is being left to grow - you may have to make accommodation for a long root that hangs down by raising the plant higher. But that horizontal root is doing just fine.
