Roots generally are a no-touch zone. Anything you might do to "help" it is more likely to do harm. Let it do what it wants to do. Unlike spikes, that will suddenly get heavy on the end when the flowers open (and so may need staking) a root won't snap under its own weight. All it needs is being left to grow - you may have to make accommodation for a long root that hangs down by raising the plant higher. But that horizontal root is doing just fine.
