What is wrong with my Cattleya? Male
Default What is wrong with my Cattleya?

Hello all,

I have this Cattleya that suffered some significant damage. It happened over the past couple of days. Every growth except the new growth is affected. All of the darker spots are bumpy, sunken, and pitted. What caused this? It is only visible on the underside of the leaves.

It was exposed to temps around 47f multiple times over several days but no other Cattleyas were damaged in the same temps.

What is the hybrid? Some Catts laugh at temperatures into the low 40's F or even lower... others get very unhappy with cold. So need to know the parentage of what did, and what didn't have issues.

It is an Rhyncattleanthe called lemon drop.

It is mostly Dowiana (30%), Guttata (18%), and Aclandiae (12%) though it is a very complex hybrid that also has some tenebrosa, luteola and of course aurantiaca.

I had looked at it recently closely and it had no issues that I could recall. It has been rainy and cold though and I think many of my Phals got cold damage as some of their leaves turned purple and pale in places.

With that much of dowiana + aclandiae, I strongly suspect cold damage. Those are both distinctly warm-growers, and account for 42% of the total. I looked it up, and there are a few other warm-growers in there accounting for about half of its parentage. So I think just warm it up... Other Catt hybrids have higher percentages of cold tolerant species so that you can get away with more. (One of the reasons I swear by Orchidwiz... as a "What can I get away with?" orchid grower, the pedigree is really helpful in figuring out how hard I can push the envelope.

There's a link that discusses temperature changes, and rate of temperature change etc.

Link

If two temperatures are significantly different, and the rate of change going from 1 to the other is relatively quick ----- then it can lead to cell damage on portions of leaves. This is aside from just absolute temperature values. Rate of change is a factor too.

Do you think it will be okay once I bring it somewhere warmer? The new growth is not affected but was this a very bad injury?

I agree with Roberta. You've got a couple ancestors in there that don't even want to wear a light hoodie let alone a coat.

I don't think there will be a long term problem other than maybe ugly leaves. But time to bring it in.
