To repot or not to repot - catt loddigesii

Hello everyone,

I need some help. I think mostly need help with my patience but here is my problem. I have this catt loddigesii with which I made a few pretty bad judgement calls. I would really like to avoid a new one. When I bought it about 2 years ago, I repotted. When I did that I made mistake #1 cut the old pot because the plant was really stuck but all its good roots were wound around the rim of the pot and I did not see them => disaster, cut through them all basically. I promptly followed with mistake #2 and I potted it in too small bark, because that what it seemed to have been grown in, but I have now come to realize it only looked that way because it was decomposed. And so, the poor plant suffered quite a bit. Thankfully, it did manage to survive my oh so competent care and about say a year and change Ago it grew a pseudobulb and some roots. Since then nothing happened. I keep on waiting for a new growth but it’s been more than one year and nothing All the other ones around it are growing like crazy, but this one, nope. So I am thinking the bark is too small and I’d like to change it but since it has no new growth I kept on waiting for that first before moving. But it’s been so long now I am starting to really want to move it new growth or no new growth. Should I? It does not seem to be declining, just not progressing either. Help!

Maybe it just needs a bit more light or lighting duration - to get itself going. Get the factory working.

Also, if this orchid is still producing roots all the time, then that is good. Even producing new lead is good.

Getting air down into the roots (within the depths of the pot) is good too. So airy-enough media is good. For your case.

If the plant does end up appearing to do nothing - then check the roots down in the media depths to see if they're ok, and to see if the media is too soggy and boggy down in those dark depths. That kind of condition needs to be avoided within those deep dark depths.

Those size bark pieces look ok though. Another thing you could try out is to aim for dryer inner region of bark, and dump your water around the outskirts of the pot. So get the water into the bark toward the rim of the pot. This could prevent the inner regions from becoming overly soggy or wet for long periods of time. But the whole pot can still stay nice and 'humid' within.

Right now, the orchid leaves look just fine. Pretty good actually. So if you think the roots are ok ----- maybe just up the lighting level and duration a bit .... but not over-doing it, as too much is no good too.

I would not repot until it is making new roots. Bifoliate Catts can stop growing for some years if you repot at the wrong time.
