root from bloom?
Default root from bloom?

Hi there!

I'm happy my repotted dendrobium nobile nobile not only did not die, but also has shown a lot of root growth and a second set of blooms for the year! But.. this is odd, looks like a root growing from the bloom point! It doesn't seem normal, maybe this orchid is the chosen one?!

What would cause this? Over fertilized? Amazing conditions? Stressful juju? Stay at home woes?! Here's the extent of my fertilizer application: soaked in kelpmax prior to new pot which was back in May. Then just watered with filtered tap water as needed. Flower buds emerged late July, and then I began adding k-lite fertilizer. I think 2-3 weeks ago I watered with leftover kelpmax.

Dilutions with kelp max were 1T to 1 gallon water; k-lite was 1/2t to 1 gallon water.

It's growing, so I'll take it, just curious what this is since I've not seen it before

kvet ------ I think it is just an aerial root. Nice to see it is growing aerial roots. Basically a keiki.

Okay, thanks. This one has had aerial roots, but first I've seen directly from the bloom stem butt.

kvet ...... me too! I don't think I have seen dendrobiums with roots coming off the flower stem before. Phals often do that. But not sure if dendrobiums typically have that behaviour.

Plants often have surprises up their sleaves (or leaves hehehe). Sleeves.

Kvet, great save! My guess would be an impending keiki... but maybe just aerial root. At any rate, any root is a good root! Actually, the behavior that I would consider unusual would be a second bloom in the same year (especially if the species Den. nobile... if hybrid, perhaps not as unusual, but a nice bonus) So congratulations on that!

Interesting, thanks Roberta. Maybe it is a hybrid, certainly a no-ID. It has bloomed twice a year since I've had it, usually a full set right around spring then a second, smaller group just before fall
