My Dendrobium is not doing too well looking for some help
Default My Dendrobium is not doing too well looking for some help

I posted a while ago to find out what orchid I have (what type is it?) so this is how I know. Also here you see how good it looked.

See pics of its present situation.

It al of a sudden starting dying on me. I lost several stems as they went brown (the leaves) from the bottom up.

Now I have several stems that have new shoots at the top so this makes me happy. However, as you see a long dead stem with new growth does not look to pretty. Is there a way I can take the new shoots and put them in new medium? Or? Any tips happily received!

Thanks.

The keiki (Hawaiian for "baby") with the long roots could be removed and planted in its own pot - the roots are big enough to sustain it. The one that has short roots should be left in place until those roots get longer, if possible. It is still drawing its energy from the mother plant, probably not enough root surface to go it alone just yet.

The mother plant isn't getting enough water. That might be because you aren't watering enough, or it might he because the roots are poor. Deep pots don't work well for most orchids because air doesn't penetrate well.

[/COLOR]I agree, too dry, that's why the leaves look "stuck together." New medium and a shallower, smaller pot might be in order. The kieki on the far right has enough roots to repot, the other does not.

Read Roberta's post again. You could cut off the one on the right and pot it up. I would use no bigger than a 4" pot. The other one doesn't have enough roots if it's own yet. 3" is about the minimum to separate them. If you do it too soon it may stall out.

That larger keiki can also be removed by just gently twisting it... I prefer doing that, rather than cutting, if the plant cooperates, since it does less damage to the mother plant. It is mature enough that it should separate fairly easily.
