Beginner woes with a Oncidium Sharry Baby's Flower Spike
Hi, I am fairly new to having orchids. I have over 15 orchids now since May 2020. I just recently purchased my first oncidium, a sharry baby. I thought the flower spike was old so I cut it. The tip was broken and I thought it was an old flower spike. I repeating myself because I still can't believe I cut the flower spike. I could kick myself in the butt.
Just thought I would share a shocking beginner moment with people that would understand.

No worries there. I have never had either of my sherry baby’s rebloom from an old spike.

Welcome to the forum!
Cutting a flower spike generally won't impact the health of an orchid. The plant hasn't put in lots of energy into producing flower buds, so all you need to do is to take good care of this orchid, and it will eventually produce a new spike.
Also, the spike could have been an old spike - hard to say. If it was an old spike, then it's known that oncidiums don't generally produce more buds from old flower spikes. |

Please don't be too hard on yourself. It could have been worse!
I killed my first Sharry Baby. The good news for you is that once Sharry Baby gets going, she produces lots of spikes and flowers. Something to look forward to.

Thanks! I knew you all would understand. My husband thinks I have way too many orchids. I think he might have to leave the house soon so that I can make more room for my orchids LMAO
I am a knitter and crocheter too and have thousands of dollars worth of Yarn. Now I am thinking of selling off the yarn to buy more orchids lol I am definitely addicted.

Hello heathersgoinnuts. I understand your addiction! My husband gave up a workshop room for my 61 orchids. (I got my first one less than 3 years ago.) Sell that yarn, girl.
