Phap bloom retention question Male
Default Paph bloom retention question

Wondering what is the usual time for a paph bloom to stick around is. I have 2 different paphs, Paph Tropical Magic and Hinsying Alien - (Paph. Supersuk 'Eureka' AM/AOS x Paph. Raisin Pie 'Hsinying') X Sib.

I picked up the Alien in spike in late January of this year. It took about a month at least for the bloom to start to open, then a month before it fully opened. It lasted a week or so after fully opening but dried out like most blooms at the end.

I've had Tropical Magic for almost a year now, was not in spike when I got it. Put out the spike about a month or so ago, and the bloom came very quickly. Turns out this is a multifloral one, so it had another bloom forming right as the other opened.

The first one lasted maybe a week or so before falling, the second one maybe about the same. Seemed like they were both in good shape when I found them on the floor. Not dried or dead or anything. Are these a bloom fast/end fast type since they put out multiple blooms? I keep it well watered, 3-4 times a week to keep it on the damp side. There is another bloom on the way, probably a week or so out yet.

Since I'm very inexperienced with these, wondering if this is expected behavior with the multifloral vs the single bloom plants.

OK, Jason. They are “paphs”, not “phaps”. The genus is paphiopedilum.

I would expect the blossoms to last several weeks on the Hsinying Alien and at least a couple each on the other.

Ray, thanks for the heads up on that, late night typing after cocktails doesn't help with copy editing, fixed (again, how embarrassing, was trying to do it on my phone this AM and made it worse I think)

We'll see how the newest one holds up. I've been gone so my recollection of how long they have lasted may be a little off.

Update, looks like the last bud has blasted. Nothing has changed recently so I'll have to keep an eye on things and hope it's nothing major. A new growth has started, maybe that has derailed the blooms?
