Smile "Sharry Baby" Oncidium orchid with very few roots

Hi to all,
I am very new to keeping orchids and with no experience.
So, I got a Oncidium orchid (Sharry Baby) as a gift.
The plant came with very thin bulbs and a lot of dead or rotten roots. I cut as much as 90% of the roots and left with very few, also cut the flower spike, and the leaves from the bulbs (because they were turning brown).
I would like to have your more experienced opinion on if this plant will make it, and any advise is much appreciated. Bellow are a pictures of it at this moment.
Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

Next time don't cut off roots. You can't tell which are dead, and they need as many roots as possible to live.

Oncidiums only make new roots when a new growth is forming. The plant has to survive until that happens. Your best chance now is to keep it in a very humid area and not let the base of the plant get dry. If it makes a new growth soon, it might live. If it doesn't the plant will get more and more shriveled.

I second ES’s advice. I had one in similar condition a couple of years ago. In my experience, these are really tough plants so I think the chances of recovery are excellent.

It looks like you have it in fairly chunky bark. You’re going to want to make sure it never totally dries out and water when the substrate approaches dryness. Check out the sticky about using skewers to gauge moisture at the top of the forum. Depending on your environmental conditions you may need to water every 1-2 days with your substrate. If this is necessary and difficult, you may want to switch to a smaller size of bark.

Mine had suffered total root death before I repotted it and the bulbs had shriveled. I decided to grow it outside which tested the limits of its cold tolerance and the new growth it sent up died the first winter. I unpotted it the next spring since it did not appear to be doing anything and then realized that it was actually finally growing some roots (whoops!). I replaced it back into its pot. When fall hit I started bringing it inside at night and have continued to bring it inside nights when the temperature goes below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. It just doesn’t seem to tolerate cold temperatures. It is currently pushing two large new growths and despite its poor condition and the abuse I’ve thrown at it appears to be on the road to recovery.

I think this is great plant to learn with. They can withstand a lot mistakes and still bounce back. Good luck!

Many thanks to both of you. I hope I will be able to save the plant.
I'll keep you updated.
Cheers
