I’ll add that most growers, no matter how good they are, still lose plants.
If they unflask and pot up 100 seedlings, they might list 90 of them as being available, so if there are losses, they can still cover orders. If there are still 10 remaining after the 90 are sold, they might not make it to the price list, leading to the situation Roberta mentioned.
Plus, if a grower wants to raise a bunch of those to maturity, a smaller percentage might be listed for sale initially, only to have them listed later or “forgotten” like the scenario above.
