I'm thinking the seller bought for a pittance a bunch of clearance supermarket plants that were almost done blooming, and had poor care for a long time. Then resold them. I agree it likely looked terrible when you got it.
I would add to what aliceinwl wrote above that giving it higher humidity would increase its chances of surviving. It will rot if the sphagnum is wet and you put it into a closed space, so don't do that. If there's a Marshalls or TJ Maxx near you, they sometimes have very tall glass vases for not much money. I have several I use as humidity chambers. Water the plant, let it set out until the moss is just somewhat moist, then put it into the vase. Don't seal the top completely.
