Talking Dendrobium Kingianum new growth is growing horizontal

Hello everyone

I was so happy when I noticed a new growth on dendrobium kingianum. I received this from online order on June 11.

First, please confirm it’s a new growth and not a root.

If it’s a new growth, do they start off horizontal like that? And they grow upwards somehow? If they won’t grow upwards like the others, should I help it grow upwards? How?

I put a bark just underneath it thinking that if it bumps it, it’ll grow upwards. I’ve also just started putting the plant underneath a small grow light, so it sees the light from above (and not the sun from the east facing window) and grow upwards.

If it’s a root, then I guess that’s ok.

I look forward to your responses. Thank you.

It looks to me to be a new root but I’m a newbie so I’m not sure. I have Phals and that’s what a new aerial root looks like when it starts on mine

I think it's a new vegetative growth. Roots are very much smaller in diameter. It should straighten itself out.

Agreed that it looks like a new growth rather than a root. You can help direct it somewhat by making sure that the light is not coming horizontally from that side. It will move upward to seek the light.

Thank you all. I’ll keep the grow light on shining from above.

I think your problem is that it looks to me from those last 3 pictures it's potted upside down.

That is def. new veg. growth and it will turn up toward the light in a week or two. If you want it to grow particularly vertically, you will need to rotate the plant from time to time, otherwise it will shoot out at an angle toward the light.
