I am glad there are other orchid lovers that take their orchids on vacation. When I go to the coast for a month every Sep, I take the sick/smallest ones with me. The mature ones make it just fine with only two waterings by a neighbor. |

Well.... I do hear airlines aren't as crowded these days... First class seats for species anyone?

Back when I was a student I would take my entire orchid collection when I went home for summer vacation (from Netherlands to France) and my orchids enjoyed traveling 1st class in the high speed trains with me on several occasions. 
I can't say it was particularily enjoyable for me though, I had a large suitcase, a big hiking backpack, my computer, a large bag with all my orchids carefully packed inside, and my guinea pig in his traveling cage. My journey was a bus, a train to Amsterdam, then a train to Paris, crossing all of Paris with the subway, another train to Lyon, and one last train to my mother's village... But the important thing is that my orchids (and guinea pig) enjoyed their vacation.  And now, as much as the 10-12 hour drive sucks, I'm very grateful to have a driver's license and a car!

First class for species. There will be some discrimination for Cattleya class, which could be upsetting for some passengers. |

Hahaha this thread has gone from good to great.
I have a guinea pig too, well, my daughter does but I am solely responsible for her survival and well being. Her name is Monica. She rules.
On topic, I will only add that 1: if you trust your friend, give them general instructions and TELL THEM TO CALL OR FACETIME YOU if they have questions. It that is too much, 2:as a rescuer of many an orchid...a dehydrated orchid is a LOT easier to save than a soaked and rotted one. (Some exceptions but overwhelmingly true)

Just an update for those interested: everyone is fine!
One of my NOID phal's spike grew 3 inches, the other NOID phal is still hanging in there with some growth to a new leaf, and my Den. Kingianium really surprised me by shooting up a good 2 inches in height.
My little mini-violet pulled through ok too (which was mainly who I was worried about) and even has a tiny little bloom. It started leaning though, so now I know to ask my friend to turn my violet at least halfway when they come to water. Also, I had some cuttings growing in water from my violet (transport damage) and they have little roots coming out of them now! I may have three new violet plants soon!
It was sorta fun to come back and see such drastic changes versus the tiny daily increments.
