Pots should have drainage holes. The more humid your growing environment, the more holes they should have. If you're growing in your home, and it's not that humid, a single bottom drainage hole is adequate. There are a lot of interesting things at second-hand stores that can be drilled to make plant containers. Phals don't need large pots. As a beginner, choose the smallest container that will hold the roots when you repot. Later when you have more experience you might be able to use a somewhat larger container. If I'm growing phals in regular pots with regular media I still use the smallest pot that fits the roots.
