New vanda coming help me fix yellow leaves on vanda and oncidium
Default New vanda coming help me fix yellow leaves on vanda and oncidium

Hi guys! I have mentioned before that I have a few yellow leaves, one on the oncidium and one on the vanda. The yellowing in the oncidium you guys have said is just natural losing of leaves. The yellowing on the vanda is something we’ve attributed to the sunburn on the orchid from Hawaii.

So now the nursery is sending me another vanda! Which is very exciting. So...even with the sunburn and everything is there some way I’m contributing to these yellow leaves? Am I not caring for these plants in some way?

I water when the roots/medium is dry, have gentle airflow on the Vandas and the humidity up around 70%. I’ve kept them in shade for several days to try to reverse the yellowing, and the oncidium seems much happier in more shade. It is medium green with bright green centers of the plant. I’ve turned up the grow light on the vanDa and cattalya since their leaves began to get dark green at the tips.

What else can I do for them? Also, the nursery is reCommending I remove the yellow leaf. Should I just cut the leaf under the base of the yellowing part and leave the green, or should I completely remove the leaf from the plant? Just want to keep these Vandas and cattalya happy since another one is coming in two days....any help would be appreciated.

In humid climates people often cut off dying leaves to try and prevent any fungus from spreading. Unless I'm suspicious of a fungal problem I let leaves dry to papery brown before removing them.

I agree, it looks like natural leaf death. I’d be inclined to let them die and drop on their own.

I'm not sure about sunburn on the vanda. The main patch looks like it could be a burn, but the fact that the yellow is extending toward the plant makes me think "infection".

I'd cut off that vanda leaf, close to its base, but don't try to remove the entire thing. Dab a Q-tip in cinnamon powder and dust the wound to seal it and hopefully prevent further infection.

Thank you everyone. I don’t expect my orchids to look perfect but when two plants get yellow leaves on them on the same windowsill (not at the same time) I just assume the problem is there care and husbandry, not external factors. I cut the leaf off at the base and removed some black coconut coir type material from between the leaf and the base. Hopefully, no more yellow leaves or orchid illness 🤞🏻
