NOIDs or No NOIDs?

Hi,

Is there any shame in growing NOIDs? I notice many people proudly listing their latin genus and species, but I can sense the nagging feeling of inferiority coming across the web when people dismiss their NOIDs with but a scant mention (usually under-the-breath). About half of the plants in my collection are NOIDs. They are all supermarket and Home Depot plants. I usually know the grower (and, of course, the genus), but many times the variety or hybrid name is not given. So often, it's just, "Phalaenopsis Orchid". Is there any reason for me to hide my NOIDs away? Also, what is the chance of identifying a variety if I know the grower? How good do people get at ID'ing these?

I like my noids... I don't think having them makes me any less better then the next person. As long as you like them display them proudly, who cares what anyone else thinks

Of course, it is nice knowing the whole name of your plants. It makes it easier to search for especific growing information, but... does anyone here knows the complete and exact name of the roses they have in the garden? I always say, I grow orchids because I like them, and I buy the ones I like... if it is a NOID it is a NOD, and that does not make it less for me. Maybe it will never make it to an exhibition, but since that's not the goal of my life There are nice and not that nice NOIDs, same a species... Important is you like the plant you have, and it can grow under your conditions!!

I try to avoid NOID's, as occasionally I get a "wild hair" and decide to do some hybridizing. No point in doing that with an unidentifiable parent.

I love my noids also. It is frustrating not knowing what to call them exactly, so I have to make up a special name for them when documenting. I always say it's a Noid, but they have to have a name when I talk to them.
Also, looking up information about them is near impossible without knowing it's parentage. You just have to go by general knowledge of the type it is.
And of course for those who hybridize them or show them, it would not be a good thing using a noid.
Other than that, they are just as enjoyable as species.
That's my opinion, anyway.

John, No shame in noids. We ALL probably have a few. I am kind of geeky (probably one of those you hear using the latin names). We all grow what we like. I like species, some like hybrids, some love Phals, some hate em'. It's a matter of preference.

Keep doing what you're doing - as long as you like it.

John, even when a plant comes with a label, if it's from a "bib box" store or grocery store, who'e to say that is the correct label? I bought orchids at a greenhouse once that the owner labelled for me. It turned out he made up most of the names as they didn't turn out as he labelled them. So they really are NOID. So I don't see the problem, except, as Ray stated, you plan to hybridize.

I've got Noids too. I love them just the same. I can't take them to be judged at an orchid society meeting but I sure get beautiful blooms from them. I have a few I bought 1 1/2 years ago and am still waiting to see what they look like blooming. Maybe this year they will bloom and surprise me. (they took awhile to re-adjust to repotting) I got them from a garage sale. I also spent $$ for a named one to find out it wasn't what the tag said . I should call it C. Hurricaine Wilma. Since it was probably her fault the tag got mixed up.

I had 3 looong spikes full of blooms on a noid den last year and it sure made me happy.

Hi John,

It's all a matter of personal preference, I think. I prefer species...just a personal choice That's not to say I don't have lots of hybrids and a number of NOIDS.

If you see a plant you love that happens to be a NOID, do you love it any less?

No? Then it's a good thing, right?

Life's too short to not enjoy every moment of it and if a NOID brings a smile to your face, that's all that matters
