That gives me a great idea. Since none of my plants are ever leaving this house, I can give them my own names. What fun! Seriously though, if the NOIDS are probably some of the most common plants, there must be a way of ID'ing. I'm new to the board, so can anyone tell about experience with the ID forum? It's not that I'm so obsessed with the name, it's just that knowing the name may also bring info on how to best care for the plant. What do you think?

I find that knowing what kind of orchid it is is sufficient for figuring out how to care for it. My favourite Phalaenopsis is a NoId - it's the first plant I ever bought. I've had it for more than seven years now. It's huge and beautiful and amazing, but I've never been able to enter it into any orchid show, because I'd have to invent a name for it. :liar: It looks a lot like Phal. Flare Spots, which looks like Dtps. Long Pride Fancy, which resembles Phal. Bedford Fantasia, which is similar to Dtps. I-Hsin Sun Beauty, which takes after Phal. Brother Mirage... :shock: it is virtually impossible to be sure, short of a DNA fingerprint analysis. And how much would that cost?

I won't arbitrarily assign a name to my plant. It's sure to outlive me - if future owners plan to make crosses with it, it will just cause endless confusion down the line!

Orchidhunter - you can always name your plant and put NOID somewhere in your chosen title .. such as Phal. NOID Brother Mirage .. etc .. this way you know what it kind of looks like yet it is designated as being unidentified ..
... it's totally up to you ;)

Many people, especially those that breed and spend very big bucks for a plant(s), put a label in the potting medium. Then if a tag is lost there is always a 'backup'.

All the chids have tags in their pots except for the NOIDS. One of the "jobs" I have been procrastinating about is to add a tag that can be tied to the actual plant itself. I dread the day a big wind comes through and knocks a few plants out of the pots and if there's a tag on the plant, I won't be so lost trying to figure out what is what.

The rule of whether to put (or not put) a ribbon on a NOID at a show or society's monthly show table is made by the society or club. My society's rule is that we won't give a first place ribbon to a NOID on the monthly show table; but a NOID may win 1st place ribbons and trophies at the annual show.

AOS rules are quite different - plants must be properly labeled (or identifiable) to be considered. If a provisional award is made, the award may not be official until taxonomic verification is obtained or the hybrid is registered at RHS.

Proper identification is a must, especially for breeding. Breeding with NOID's (whether intentional or by accident) may yield some beautiful offspring - without a way to establish its pedigree.

Oh my and to think I was joking well there is deffinitely a lot of choice in NOID Paraphernalia :biggrin:

I purchased a named variety of Cattleya a few years ago and what I received had a tag calling it C. Skinneri. That's not much to describe it. I prefer to deal with AOS Marketplace sellers. Many others don't ship what you order, and you don't find out until they bloom.
