Getting my favorite Zygopetalum to grow again.

That is so good to hear. I will make sure it doesn’t dry out.

It actually does have plenty of viable roots right now which is good. I was worried about having it lower because of all the places where it was recently divided getting infected if those touched the medium but I guess that shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

Now that the surface of the cuts has dried out, there should be no problem with infection.

It always a good practice to do not pot right after a division/operation/whatever that means cutting.
Let it dry for 3 to 4 days, apply some cinammon if possible (depending where the cut is) and then it's ok to pot.

I mix the dip n grow per the instructions in a small misting bottle I have. Pull the plant out of the pot, remove all old medium, trim dead roots and thoroughly wash the plant. Spray a liberal amount of the dip n grow solution all around the root producing zone of the plant and re-pot. I give it 24 hours in the new pot before I water so it has a chance to absorb as much of the hormone as it can take.
The Kelpmax does a good job too but I use that as more of a monthly fertilizer to promote overall healthy root growth. What we're talking about here is open heart surgery. I've never tried Kelpmax for that but Ray could probably tell us.

Thank you. I am going to buy the dip and grow too then and use it in conjunction with the kelpmax. The problem isn’t so much a lack of roots but a lack of bulbs and no active leads.

Is there a way to use the dip and grow without repotting? I just repot it a few days ago and I would hate to have to put it through that again since I heard zygo roots are sensitive to repotting. I wouldn’t want to lose any still alive roots. If it’s better to unpot it again though, I can do that.

You don’t want to do that.

Dip ‘N’ Grow contains two auxin rooting hormones - IBA and NAA. That is what they will try to stimulate the plant to do - grow roots. Too much auxin treatment can accelerate the plant to death. 2,4-D, the herbicide, is an auxin.

The complex chemistry of KelpMax is a general growth stimulant. Yes, it stimulates root growth, but it pushes all aspects of the plant’s growth, as well.

Hello all,

This favorite Zygopetalum is still alive. After a few kelpmax treatments and several months, it has finally managed a new growth of a sort. What do I do now?

Keep watering well. Keep in a humid, cool area with good air movement. Those few new roots need to support the new growth.

Looking at the tag, that is Zygonisia Skywalker.

Be VERY careful watering it when growing in sphagnum, as the roots are quite sensitive to suffocation and rot.

That moss looks to be pretty old. When using sphagnum, I find it best to repot every 6 months and try to water from the bottom only.
