Sorry I'm late here, but red root tips are good. That means they are getting a fair amount of light. Almost any orchid can have red root tips, Phals can, Aerangis can, Angrecoids can, Neofinetias can, etc. Green root tips are to be sought after as they mean growing roots under proper light. Green root tips aren't the "only game in town" however". Cutting either one off is the worst thing you could do! You want growing root tips. Roots are good! As for water, there are some good tips here, buy distilled or RO water at grocery store or better yet, install a unit under sink (or have one installed.)
