I do not think your rhisome is in danger as long as it is on top. Old roots most likely will dry out if you wont water it for a few days anyway. In my limited experience new roots grow predominantly from new shots. Actually I just repotted a cattleya with similar condition, very few old roots left, due to rot due to overwatering i guess, rhisome is fine,old canes are fine.
