New to Oncidiums

Hi everyone! I just received my first ever oncidium, it is the Pacific Sunrise "Hakalau". I live in a very cold, northern climate that has very short summers. Any tips or tricks that I should know? Thanks!

What orchids do you successfully grow now?

I just recently got into orchids so the only orchid I've had for awhile is a phal. I recently decided to try cattleyas, miltoniopsis, oncidiums, and intergenerics. They are all brand new!

They're generally one of the more "water friendly" orchids and are good for those who tend to overwater. They need relatively bright sun and are sensitive to fertilizer so try not to supply too much if you do they will tell you by turning the tips of their leaves brown. Overall they hate to be repotted and are happiest if you leave them alone for as long as possible since they have such fragile roots. Hope this gives you a little start!

Thanks for the tips! I probably should not have but I did repot her even thought she’s in spike, the media was pretty decomposed so I knew it just couldn’t wait. Hopefully it will respond well to the fresh media!

I am one of those people who repots at any growth stage even when it's "technically" not correct lol, haven't had any issues yet! You may/may not lose the spike or experience a shorter lifespan of blooms, but in the long term keeping the plant healthy for better shows in the future is much more important Welcome to the hobby and good luck with your new additions!
