Default Zygopetalum, Debbie de Millo "Honolula Baby"

I have a new zygo seedling, twelve inches high in a 2 inch pot.
Giving it the same intuitive care as the two Vandas that just arrived from Florida/ In great shape, loosely tied the leaves to a stick. and secured the tie up about 8 inches to support the slightly floppy tall leaves that were not really damaged, but did have some mild leaf flop from packaging.

I have never had a zygo, but after a year, I am becoming brave enough to start with some other orchids, that I know nothing about.

I think I remember they grow fast, and if that is so, how soon if it is ok, do I repot into S/H?

Zygos require:
  • Cool to intermediate temps.
  • Bright light (= light shade, similar to Cattleya conditions).
  • Should never go dry (within framework of heavy watering, and interval to nearly dry out).

In the greenhouse, I grow mine in plastic pots with spaghnum/bark (80/20) mix. I tried a bark mix, but it was too dry for my watering schedule.

Again, you need to figure out how to provide the basic conditions, within the watering schedule you can provide.

S/H questions for Ray, and others who grow in LECA,
Is there possible damage to put seedlings, such as a zygo or vanda into S/H?
I have never had a seedling before and now I have three. It is so dry in NM, I grow every mature plant in S/H with no problems. Just wondering about the babies and also would like some info about Zygos. I was attracted to the Debbie de Mello for its purple pedals and wide lip with just a small amount of white .

I imagine that the Zygopetalum would do fine in semihydro. I have a bunch of Zygos but I grow them in bark.

Depending on what you grow them in be prepared to repot regularly. I grew my first Zygos in plastic pots and they grew so many roots that the pots split down the sides. I spent most of a day cutting up the pots to remove as much of the plastic as possible. I’ve now taken to overpotting them a bit and using clay pots to give myself more time between repots. I also figure I can just crack the pot and be done with it, if they become difficult to extract (no more roots escaping through every gap).

I believe zygos all tend to spot heavily when they are stressed and S/H adaption is stressful. They will get over it. Best to do it only when they are putting out new growth / roots. They will love the filtered sun.

Lol @ ballpeen. My nickname refers to the style of banjo I play

And I have a few friends that could just call me a bent nail, but I get by. Not referring to the typical reference of being crooked tho , I am quite straight in that meaning of the word. lol
