Grex - "A Greek name for herd; in taxonomy it refers to the group name for all offspring from crossing the same two (or more) parents. The term is frequently used among Orchid hybridizers." ( as per Definition of grex )

"The resulting progeny from the union of two different species is known as a primary hybrid; of a species and a hybrid, or of two hybrids is known as a complex hybrid." (as per Orchid Glossory )

Dendrobium bigibbum
is synonymous to
- Dendrobium phalaenopsis
- Dendrobium bigibbum var. phalaenopsis
- Callista phalaenopsis
- Vappodes phalaenopsis
( as per Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew: World Checklist Series )
This is an interesting read on this dendrobium and a discussion of it's naming - Dendrobium Species Culture - scroll down to DENDROBIUM SPECIES CULTURE - Part 2 - Dendrobium phalaenopsis
and yes, Phalaenopsis is a genus of orchid ..

The word Phalaenopsis comes from the root "Phalaen"-like and is probably a reference to the genus Phalaena, the name given by Carolous Linnaeus, to a group of large moths as the flowers of some species supposedly resemble moths in flight. This is why they are referred to as Moth orchids.

Any other questions?

Hybrids can go back a very long way, indeed. That is why trying to accurately identify them just by visual characteristics can be so very inaccurate .. All hybrids lead back to species orchids of the genus at one point in the lineage or another ...

Default Thanks Dorothy!!!!!!

Thanks for your help!!!! I was able to find the RHS website, and from there, work out the exact geneological line of this hybrid (something that really interests me FYI).

Well, anyways from the RHS site I determined that:

10 species were used.
23 different hybrids were used 3 of them used more than once.

Hybrids were crossed with hybrids 9 times.
Hybrids were crossed with species 7 times.
Species were crossed with species 7 times.
(these three facts do not include the multiple uses of the three hybrids)

Here's a chart if you want to look at exactly how it was made!!! You'll need Excel to view it.

Thanks again Dorothy!!!!

You are very welcome .. it is amazing what goes into some hybrids ..
I wish I could have seen your chart .. but I don't have Excel ..
I know what goes into researching lineages as I have done a few myself .. it is quite fascinating and lends a new appreciation into orchid hybrids.

So, how should I care for this orchid, now that I know what exactly it is? I'm assuming it needs to be treated a little differently, considering that it's a seedling still.

That's basically all of the info I got on the parentage of the plant and it's still a baby (the seller said it was a cutting from a bigger plant).

Here's a picture of the plant itself, as well as a picture of what the flowers are, I'm assuming, going to look like when it matures enough to bloom.

So, If I could get any info on the parents, and it's growing environment that would be very helpful!!!!
Your plant, while not awarded, is a very popular hybrid called Cherries Jubilee. It is dendrobium phalaenopsis-type and should reward you with several long-lasting, colorful flowers.
