Help with Dendrobium Orchid Male
Default Help with Dendrobium Orchid

Hello - i'm new to this board, and pretty new to orchids.

Anyways with my new obsession with orchids my girlfriend just bought me a dendrobium. I'm not sure what type. It was in pretty bad shape when I got it, the flowers were really droopy and the bark was extremely dry. So i watered it with a very dilute fertilizer (20-10-20). Anyways the flowers are looking a lot better now and the last bud is very slowly opening. However, over the past few days the top leave on the non blooming stem is turning yellow and brown. I also notice that a few of the roots looked burned at their tips.

Now, i'm not sure if I should keep watering it or not. I'm not even sure if it's a decidious type dendrobium or not.

Help me out..

Here's some pictures of it.

I'm not a dendro expert, but your plant looks pretty good to me. The yellow leaf looks like it could be a machanical injury, or it could be just old, and ready to go. You have some good looking new roots starting too. It looks like it is in sphagnum moss right now, and is in need of repotting very soon. Get some medium bark mix, and repot it in the clay pot you have the original pot in. Hopefully we can get some more ideas from the real dendro guys here. Good luck, and if you have any more questions, fire away.

Dens need to dry out between watering. You can even mount them on wood. I have some in pots with hydroton, some mounted and some in spag moss. The one in moss gets watered maybe every two weeks and it is outside. No rain gets on it just my watering. Blooms like crazy. The mounted are keikis and age probably 6 months from blooming. Growing great. Potted guys are doing their thing. These guys like to be potbound even growing roots outside the pot, bright light not direct sun and kept on the dryer side. Too much water and you will see yellowing leaves and the psudobulbs will start to mush. If that happens remove the mushy bulbs. Snip and sprinkle cinnamon on the cut. Hope this helps.
