The meaning is - over a span of 2 years (which is still rather significant) - we managed to find out something significant that you failed to find out - because you didn't do the important testing that we had done.

The tone I used here is merely to let you know - to avoid using your 'you lack experience' tactic in discussions ..... particularly when you appear to lack certain knowledge yourself about the topic of discussion. That is ... you cannot even explain the results reported by us other members.

Sorry if I opened a festering wound. That was not my intention.
I actually am a big "experimenter" but 4 years ago I moved my entire collection 1900 miles from a north country greenhouse to a sub-tropical shadehouse and am still sorting out the positive and negative outcomes of having done that. One experiment at a time is enough for me, otherwise you have discarded the all important control factor and now you don't know what caused what.
Maybe I'll try something different with one of them next year but for now, I'm sticking with what has been working.

KG ...... you didn't start anything mate. Absolutely nothing wrong with experimenting for good intentions, and for the benefit of orchids and orchid growing. I commend you for it.

My tests were pretty much expected to be 'safe'. I had a very strong feeling (in advance of testing) that my catasetum plants wouldn't end up dying, or anything bad would happen to them. In fact, they've been doing incredibly well - thriving. Tough and rugged, except the only thing I had to really watch out for was - the spider mites (and also - importantly - to not over-water the spaghnum for those plants potted in 100% spaghnum).

I didn't 'buy into' the roots getting harmed by water in the first place (for catasetum coming out of true dormancy that is). And now, I'm very confident that watering catasetum roots 'early' (when coming out of dormancy) isn't going to set back catasetums, or to kill them etc.

The main thing is - maintain suitable growing temperatures, and avoid having the roots becoming starved of oxygen - which can happen if water in and around the roots is unable to move around at all (or very much - eg. roots too wet all or most of the time, or constantly very soggy media etc).
