Which orchids can be hung?
Default Which orchids can be hung?

Hey friends I am new here! I am looking to hang an orchid in a hanging basket but I am not sure what orchids can be hung this way. Can you let me know which orchids are suitable to be hung in a basket type hanger. If that makes since lol.

Thank you for any help you can give me! I attached a photo of the hanging basket I am talking about.

Only the guilty ones are allowed to be hung.

Sorry, just couldn't resist!

Okay, time for being a bit more serious. What kind of orchids do you WANT to put in them? The answer is just about anything that won't get lost in whatever size basket you have. Too many choices to list.

Have you ever had mounted orchids? Have you grown orchids for awhile? Not being rude, just don't know your orchid growing experience. Growing in a basket is similar to a mount, but not entirely. And very different from growing in a bark medium mix or sphag. Have you researched the difference in care it will take with a hanging basket?

PS to Orchid Board!!

@WaterWitchin

Thank you for your response. Lol!

Ok so I have 3 phalaenopsis orchids, 2 of which were almost dead with one leaf that was completely limp.

I attached a few photos of 2 of my orchids and the one rehabbed which I am really proud of!

I replanted all 3 in Expanded Clay Pebbles and cleaned out all the dead roots. They are now growing all new leaves and new roots along with some air roots.

Anyways, my next project I want to do is set up a hanging orchid so I was wondering which orchids are best to do this. This will be my first time doing this so I am trying to get as much informations as possible. Are phalaenopsis suitable for being hung in a basket?

I have found that Phalaenopsis do great in hanging baskets. BUT... they need more frequent watering (growing where drips won't be a problem) Mine are in a greenhouse, with either large bark or loosely-packed sphagnum (both of which drain well and dry quickly)

So the details of how they will grow best for YOU will depend on your conditions. No matter what, you need to give the plant what it needs in terms of temperature (Phals want warmth, not below about 65 deg. F), air and water (really, what they need is "damp air" rather than "wet" with a wet-dry cycle) If you can achieve the temperature and water needs, the basket gives excellent air flow and the roots love to cling to the wood. (Think of baskets as three-dimensional mounts)

@Roberta

THANK YOU. This just answered my question. Phalaenopsis it is because i'm somewhat familiar with them.

Im in southern ca by the coast so i'm hoping this will help.

Last question. Would planting them in semi hydroponic clay pellets work with hanging the plant? What are your thoughts?

Hi, neighbor...
First, whatever you do with the plant, it'll have to be indoors. I do know a few people that get away with growing Phals outdoors on sheltered patios next to the house, winter nights really get too cold for most of them although you might find a particularly tough one. I don't use semi-hydro myself but many people on the Forum use the technique quite successfully for Phals. Whether hanging or not shouldn't matter. If you're trying to save space by going vertical, it should be fine. Just remember though, when you water you need to fill the container and let it drain (don't just top off the reservoir) so you still need to deal with drips.
