Hey all,

Was checking out my collection today and I noticed some growths coming out of the top of some of the old canes on one of my den phals. I had previously noticed what looks like a new cane developing but the ones off the top are different. Flower spikes? See pics below. Thanks!

Are you sure this is a Den Phal? Going strictly off the canes it looks like it might be a Den. kingianum or something like that. The reason I ask is because kingianums need different care than Den Phal types and if grown like a Den Phal (particularly in the winter) they tend to produce keikis on the canes rather than flowers. I couldn’t tell you if those are keikis or spikes in the pics, it’s the right time of year for either. (Edit: two of those growths do look a bit more like keikis, can’t really tell about the third one.)

Wait and see, I guess

Hey SaraJean,

I believe it is a Den phal, the flowers match what I've been able to find online. I got another one at the same time and it is putting up a new cane, it's far enough along to tell. No other new growths on that one like the one pictured above. It will be an exciting waiting game to see what happens with it! Thanks for the reply!

Have the photos been removed? I'm not able to see them.

Hey camille, they should be there, I embedded them so they may act funny depending on what kind of browser/security/internet you've got.

Quick follow up on this post, a month later and things have cleared themselves up. All the growths higher on the canes are keikis, and the one at the base of the center cane is a new cane forming.
