Some flowers clear, some mottled - virus? Female
Default Some flowers clear, some mottled - virus?

Hi, I have an orchid that I recently got from Odom's Orchids. It's a cross called Beautiful Nicole, not a clone. It bloomed within a month or two after I received it, and some of the flowers were clear, and others were mottled. I'm wondering if it's a virus? I don't know if some of the flowers would look fine or if they would all be mottled if it was a virus. Any input would be welcomed.

First, welecome to the Orchid Board.

I would be very suspicious - especially the back flower in the second photo, that is the sort of "color break" that is very characteristic of virus, especially in Cattleyas. (The color break doesn't necessarily show up in all the flowers with virus) Environmental problems and insect damage can do this too, though The only sure way to determine virus is to test. Since you got this recently, you should send photos to Odom's and ask their opinion. They may want to test their own plants that were near it or from the same batch. Even the most reputable and careful growers sometimes get hit (and I would put Odom's in that category) Perhaps they would even send you a test kit. And keep away from your other plants until you can verify that it is OK.

I agree with Roberta. If some flowers are clear, while others have this issue, then also look into the possibility some sort of insect attack, like thrips or something.

But - if you notice even the smallest amount of colour break on the 'clear' (assuming unblemished) flowers, then definitely isolate the orchid - don't put it anywhere near other orchids - just in case (of virus).

Even with the current situation - should isolate the orchid too - in case it really is due to virus activity.
