Bulbophyllum rothschildianum repot? - Orchid Board

I have a Bulbopyllum rothschildianum that should probably be repotted but I am not quite sure what to do with it because of its long growth that would be hard to fit in a normal pot (see photos). does anyone have some advice?

Try bending the rhizome if it is flexible so that it can fit into a slightly bigger pot. Also, if this is anything like some other Bulbophyllums, it is possible that higher light can lead to shorter rhizome length (ie., less rambling/trying to grow towards the sun). Maybe some of the other members have better suggestions?

I think that plant is telling you it wants to be mounted, not grown in a pot.

I agree, mount if you can supply its moisture requirements. It really wants a tree to climb.

Or a wide basket. I like both metal and cedar, lined with coir and with a very loose sprinkle of chopped sphag for moisture retention.

They can reach, climb and ramble all over the place

What would you recommend as a mounting media? I would guess tree fern would be best. Having said that though, mounted plants are difficult for me due to exceptionally low humidity and busy schedule.

Perhaps a basket of sphagnum would be better, I have a few other bulbos in that that seem to be doing pretty well.

Tree fern would let the plant climb, but under your circumstances may not be so good. Do consider DC's suggestion of the wide, shallow coir-lined basket with some sphagnum moss - probably much easier for you to maintain, and should work to keep the plant under control (and happy)

I have some bulbo's that will happily grow in a pot. Others make a prison break directly for the edge of the pot. Those are now mounted and hanging. I don't care what they do.

Lol at prison break. It’s so true!!

The nice thing about the basket technique Is you can adjust the sphag to allow for a longer or shorter dry out period. When it’s really rainy here I’ll take almost all the moss out of my bulbo baskets since they get flooded daily.

If you have a dry climate or not a lot of time, add more LOOSE moss and it will stay moist and humid longer.
