Wilsonara Space Mine Red Rendezvous Wrinkled Pseudobulbs
Default Wilsonara Space Mine Red Rendezvous Wrinkled Pseudobulbs

Greetings,

So, I recently bought this wilsonara red rendezvous and the pseudobulbs just don't seem to be taking up water. The roots are fine, brown from tanin stains but crisp, and there are numerous new growths and flowers, and no yellowing or rot that I can spot. I have soaked this thing like three times last week and there just doesn't seem to be any impact. I have been told that some intergenerics, once wrinkled, remain so. Is this the case for some of you?

The medium is bark and sphagnumn, 50/50, and there are two new growths which each had two flower stocks, then a back bulb that sprouted 3 new growths, and another back bulb with one new growth. The two new growths with each two flower stems are the ones that seem thinnest. I actually cut the flowers off for fear that the water uptake could not keep up. So as you can see, alot of growth was happening when I got it. And again, I know what root rot looks like and it doesn't seem to be present. New roots are growing off the new bulbs. Suggestions? I have had it for a week and a half now and I think the thinning has stalled.

Yes, it is common for wrinkled pseudobulbs to stay that way even if they are soaked. The thing to look at is the new bulbs; as long as they look plump and healthy you don't have a problem. Can you post a picture?

The thing is, the newest bulbs that were flowering are wrinkled. The newest growth is in shoot stage with no pleating but no bulb yet. It came 12 days ago bone dry. I repotted and roots were old but hard and looked functional.

You can see there are four new shoots, and previously four flower stalks I removed. I'm wondering if it is just slow to take up water since, if it really was taking up no water for 12 plus days, it would have to be in worse shape.

I’ve bought Oncidium alliance plants in similar shape. I usually don’t see the water loss/wrinkling stop until they start pushing new roots. Depending on the genetics of the plant the pseudobulbs will either partially or fully replump. I’ve had good luck so far using Kelpmax to jump start root growth on plants that need a little kick.
