The eggshells need to start decomposing before they become a source of Calcium. When I get new Cattleyas, I break up some eggshells and mix it with the lava rock and then I usually use Cali-magic or, if the orchids are outside, powdered milk for a while. I add new eggshells to each pot now and then (my eggshells are distributed among many of my non-orchids, too).
I discovered my orchids needed more Calcium many years ago when in the process of losing most of my Cattleyas to Black Rot. An article on rot with vegetables made me realize that it was the same thing happening with the orchids. I have been preaching the Calcium ever since. As long as I am diligent about the Calcium, I have not had any problems since. Good luck!
