Many Orchid Cultivars named 'Bryon'
Default Many Orchid Cultivars named 'Bryon'

11/25/19 Hi - I am new to this forum and have minimal knowledge of orchids, although I am a serious collector of Rhododendrons and other broadleaf evergreens. When I visit the American Orchid Society website and peruse the vast collection of orchid photos, I notice that there are very many cultivars named 'Bryon.' I asked the AOS about this and their Membership Associate told me it was up to each exhibitor to name their cultivar, and that the cultivar name may or may not refer to an actual person. They had no idea of why there are so many cultivars named 'Bryon' and who 'Bryon' might be.
My question is - is there someone in the orchid world named Bryon after whom these cultivars are named? Thank you.

It can happen. It may even be just one particular orchid breeder having produced lots of various crosses, and then just named those crosses with the same name such as 'Byron'.

Unless you are able to figure out who 'Byron' is from own online reseearch or detective work ----- it can be difficult or even impossible to trace who 'Bryon' is/was.

But there's always hope.

Most welcome Anne. For your case - it's possible ----- just possible that this particular 'Bryon' could be linked to somebody once called Lord Byron.

Bryon Rinke, an excellent grower who has obtained a bunch of awards for his plants (Orchid Wiz lists 570), often uses the 'Bryon' culivar epithet.
