We have seen on the news etc that cells can sometimes grow parts or components that they wouldn't normally grow into. This has been seen to happen in animals and plants. Maybe this is one of those cases.

If you happen to take digi-pics of it, then just post some good quality images eg. 1024 * 768 pixel (or similar) here - just to get some visuals on it.

Maybe try a heavy daily misting to wet the roots above the substrate. For whatever reason (as long as you don’t have rot issues) this always stimulates root growth in short order from mine. Once the new root(s) make it a couple inches into the substrate the plant perks up.
