My Elizabeth Anne Buckleberry is growing .. Question about growths? Female
Default My Elizabeth Anne Buckleberry is growing .. Question about growths?

My Elizabeth Anne Buckleberry is growing new ...

Not sure what these are called? Limbs? Bulbs? But I wanted to share.

I wanted to share my surprise that these guys are growing and ask a question.

Maybe a dumb question but I assume growth is a good sign ? I have heard that stressed plants will produce flowers to try as a latch ditch effort to save itself.

In Oct, I posted about these three single bulbs . I just purchased them off Ebay and the seller sent me three bulbs BUT , only two were attached to each other and one of the two had a rapidly growing black spot. So I removed it and cut out the spot.

Original post here

Anyways I wanted to share that each of these bulbs have new growth.

Bulb A is the one that I cut out the black spot and also cut out a squishy spot out of it's bulb. I am really surprised to see any growth from it.

Bulb B is the bulb that was a singleton in the pot that the grower sent to me.

Question about these new growths.

It has two new growths on it that I just discovered. Unfortunately I had a river rock on that area to try and balance the plant in the pot. I labeled them 1st and 2nd but I don't really know what started growing first.

I'm just wondering, would the first be something different than the one labeled 2nd? I see something of the same setup on Bulb C but I thought perhaps one stopped growing so another was started.

On Bulb C , the arrow labeled 1st is a growth that was growing but seemed to have stopped. Then the second growth started and hopefully won't stop. Are these different things ? I thought I may have caused the first growth to have stopped growing.

Bulb C is the largest of the three and originally attached to bulb A. The first growth was there when I first received the plant but after I separated it and repotted it, I seem to remember it grew a bit more than stopped. Later the second growth started up.

Well congratulations! Looks like you've got several new growths (pbulbs) coming up. Just enjoy and watch them grow. The one that seems to have "stalled" in growth... it may start up again. Can't tell from the picture, but maybe while just coming up the tip sustained some damage somehow? Picture is a bit blurry in that area.

Yes, this is a good thing... and you're doing a great job getting it going again. Especially considering we're only around a month from that first post and pictures.

Edit: pbulb is "shorthand" for pseudobulb, which is what that limb/branch new thing is called. As it grows, it will get that thicker pod- or bulb-shaped form that sits right below the leaves. That's the part that stores the energy for the plant when the growing conditions are rough, and helps the overall plant to survive.

Totally agree. Signs of really nice activity going on.

For these sorts of orchids - cattleya included, the 'new growth' coming out will sometimes be called by some growers as a 'lead' (pronounced 'leeeed').

There are a bunch of orchid/plant words here from AOS. Just skip through some and they even have a definition for 'lead'. But then they start getting into other term like 'sympodial' - which apparently brings some very interesting discussions about orchids that are sympodial and monopodial.

Basic Orchid Glossary

Also ..... a picture is worth a ..... well ... some words. This link here is pretty good.

excellent growth party!!

on my similar Bulbos, Medusea and Rothschild, they get really leggy if they aren't getting enough light and they will reach to get to more light.

so the perspective is weird bc i am standing over this basket looking down and its a tough spot to get my 6'4" body into for the shot

you can see how far is between the pbulbs because she wasn't getting enough light and was trying to find a brighter spot...the new growth start out skinny and often wont plump up into the swollen bulbs for as much as a year in my experience
