What to buy? Female
Default What to buy?

Hello,

I am very excited that I will finally be able to attend an orchid show (Tamiami). Since I usually have difficulty importing anything to my little island, I am like a kid promised a trip to the candy store. This will be a rare chance for me to actually buy plants since our orchid society is helping with the import, inspections and documents for everyone who is going to the show to buy plants. Normally importing plants by oneself is such a hassle that nobody does it and the local selection is not great. So now is my chance to diversify! I have a few things in mind but also looking for some suggestions of warm growing orchids with red flowers (someone loves red and this would be a nice present). I am also wondering if I should try to buy and grow a vanilla. High humidity and high temps are the default setting here so it should thrive, but worried about how unruly the vine might get. Any advice? Thank you!

For reds --- maybe C. Tainan City.

Or Rlc. Thaksina Red.

C. Jewel Red 'Shinzu' is nice too.

And Rlc. Red Crab 'Kuan Miao'

If you like Phragmipedium --- eg. Phrag. Andean Fire, or Phrag. Elizabeth Castle.

As for a vanilla ------ these are relatively easy to grow, and they are pretty-much vines. I think that if you haven't grown vanilla orchids before, then it will be a novelty. But probably wears off after a short time. But - I think that - if can get one, then might as well get one. Once they start growing, they get long and goes everywhere.

As for what orchids to get ----- assuming good growing conditions - it just depends on what sort of orchids or flower types/features you like in general. So it's ok to mention roughly what you had in mind to begin with.
