Dendrobium Spike stopped growing? - Orchid Board

Hey there,

I think my Dendrobium spike stopped growing but I'm not sure why. I am wondering if you guys could give me some idea(s) and I can not do the same again?

I'm not 100% however if it's stopped or is there another stage it is in? Reason I say that is it's brown now but I think it's a bit longer than it was in the picture labeled Oct 26?

The attached pictures shows the spike on Oct 26 and the other picture is from today. I started noticing that the spike's growth was really, really slow or stopped.

Anyways what do you think? Slow or stopped?

Any ideas why it may have died if it is? Things I think I have done which may have contributed

Stopped watering as much. I was watering once a week but noticed it didn't give the medium enough chance to dry out.
Sprayed it with Physan 20 but that was much early on before the spike emerged.
Sprayed it with isopropyl alcohol when I discovered spider mites on another plant.

Patience, grasshopper. If it wants to grow, it will. I don't think any of the things you mentioned would be the kiss of death for the spike.

What type of Dendrobium it is?

To me, that looks like an aborted spike - the plant simply didn't have enough reserves to expend on blooming, so gave up with its growth.

Ray do you have any suggestions on why this may have happened? It was doing so well from the time it started to develop this large limb (bulb?) , from May. If it didn't have enough reserves all of the sudden then it leads me to think the fact that I started holding off on watering it may be the cause?

The photo is too small but iy seems to be a nobile type Den.
If that's the case, several things:
Nobiles blooms appear along the pbulbs (some people call it canes) and not at the tip.
They bloom mostly in late winter/spring. I wonder if it was really a bloom.
In this time pf the year they stop growing.

Oh I'm sorry. I was thinking you meant like it's name or something. Duh. My bad. It's a Phal not a Nobile.

I don't know that withholding water would do that, unless it was drastic. Maybe it didn't get enough light? Maybe too much nitrogen? Maybe improper temperatures? Maybe it's not mature enough?

Plants "want" to bloom. Do everything right and they will, Anything we do that doesn't fit its needs can detract from its ability to do so. Read this.

Thanks for the info. A bit frustrating because I don't know. Out of the list then it would be weather maybe? It may have gotten too cold a night or two. Oiy.

I know you don't know and not looking for a concrete answer . Just speculating.
