Unrecognized growth on phalaenopsis flower spike

Wow, thanks for all the advice! This is a plant I bought at the grocery store over a year ago but it's been doing well and flowering regularly. I'm not sure of the hybrid. I missed a couple of waterings around the time the flower spikes got to the height in the photo, so perhaps it's possible that that's what shocked it. I'll keep regular care as suggested and will let you know what happens. Thank you again.
