I just want to add, based on my 9 Zygos, they are pretty intolerant of even bruising of roots. When they’re happy, the roots grow like crazy so if a few get damaged while repotting and die: no big deal. But, if there are very few live roots, you’re going to want to be very careful.
I move all mine over to small bark eventually, but I’ve had them do great in sphagnum and even that ProMix peat substrate if there’s lots of air in the root zone. With the grocery store Zygos I’ve bought in ProMix, I pull them out of the plastic and set them in a loosely fitting clay pot until I get around to repotting them. I’ve kept some this way for months and they’ve done great: no flower drop, pseudobulbs replumped, and healthy roots.
