I have not found the need to let the pots sit in water, but I do make sure that they stay moist. I can see that trick would certainly be helpful if you go on vacation for a few days, or if the house is very dry due to winter heating. The goal is keeping them on the damp side. The "how" can vary. Mine get the same dilute fertilizer mix as everything else, but I don't drench them, they get a light touch every couple of weeks.
